« From 1995-2003, I created some “art sites”. Meaning: (a) no ads, etc.; and (b) rather than using a webpage just to showcase art from altogether different media, the idea was: the web page is a unique type of backdrop. To scratch but the surface: there were lots of different browser types, OSes, and screen sizes with which to deal. Add to that the general rule about nontriviality, and soon the implementations can start to get complicated. To that, add: Edginess. Pretty soon you've got yourself a bunch of strange-looking art sites. |
« I've never been great at music. But when I hung out at a friend's studio in Cleveland for too long, I was gravely informed that I had a good singing voice -- and that if I expected to keep hanging around I should pick up a mike and do some backup vocals. Early on I worked up a first good song of my own, we recorded it and called it something but that one got lost in the shuffle. The only song I currently find is this 0:24 chuckler I made Pete record at the end of a long day. Also: my playlist and a few songs from A-1 friends. |
« From 1981-2003, I wrote a bunch of poems. I gave almost all of them away and kept no copies. I do still trade doggerel with friends ’pon social media, but other artistic interests always encroach. As far as what I can dig out and post right now, I have only a few samples but I may dig out more. Most of it was written for women. At left: fragment of a poem I wrote in 1993. This was accomplished not long after I was told "no go" on starting a law practice cuz I'd smoked marijuana. Presto! Instant staggeringly significant historic poem. |
« I've never been great at photography. But here's misc. stuff (chron order: rough). Since I've started posting pics on Instagram, what I post here from now on will ~ doubtless ~ be a subset of that. What's here is a smattering of unrelated shots. Left: bldg. at Nassau & Witherspoon streets in Princeton, NJ where I lived for awhile back in 1992 with Dr. Albert Young when I worked on misc. intellectual property stuff for Dr. Antony Jameson and the ol' rocket scientist profs. We lived in the uppermost storey with a grand view through bay windows. Niiiiiice fireplace. Wish I had interior shots. |
« Content: six drawings I did as a kid (one pre-K, two early grade school, three from late grade school); a drawing I did in college; an animated .GIF I made for my old memoirs website; a pen-and-ink drawing made of friend's coffee cup's logo in Cleveland music studio, 2003 (at left: as morphed into something else with Photoshop); some frames from my storyboard, along with a scan of one of the working sheets I made for Chapter 0. I plan to post more images as I create them, and any other weird stuff I find in the archives. |
« At left: mini-pic of early .exe file I made for vol. 1 of my memoirs. Created with Macromedia Director; first I made a .dir file, and then burned a Shockwave file (for a website component) and this .exe (standalone proggie). It was made 20 yrs ago; not much content is displayed w/in the .exe container, but it still plays on newer PCs if you run it w/in Win XP compatibility mode (... downloadable). Beyond that, clicking on this inset pic launches my Memoirs Page where I posted stuff like .apk (Android app) and .pdf files vol. 1 © J. Burdick |
« From 2003-2008 I published two companion blogs (archived; domain ownership now expired) sub nom. "Robosoldiers" and "Continuous Leeks". Blogs were published via RogBlog (a PERL script by R. Schlafly) w/ small mods I added for my own use. I eventually ('05) decided to mirror the blogs on a mirror site (redundantly hosted at a different domain), but this was an art project so I decided the mirrored blogs should be "tru-mirror" -- viz. horizontal (left-right) mirror images of the originals. At left: hyperbolic sitemap pic. |
« Modest examples of technology dabbling on my part. Most of the techy stuff I've done is just using math in website scripts; creative uses of existing tech. My "day job" as patent analyst has me working with other inventors' patent matter. I've also done some (real) beta testing. Beyond that, I've taken flying lessons (VFR/Single-Engine Land); experimented with some different methods of plant resin extraction (knew the Organic Chem class would come in handy someday); and got a patent issued (US 9,558,636) on ATMs. |
« Most of my speaking art has been in forensics (argumentation & debate). I was ... an eerily successful competitive debater in both high school and college. When it was time for law school, I decided it was time to win the Intellectual Property Law Moot Court. Other examples: my work as an Internet Developer at Wave Technologies, where I classroom taught and was an invited Guest Speaker, and at SLUCare where I was invited to teach CME courses. I also represented a few legal clients as 3d-yr law student /u/ court rules. |
« At left: a frame from my (in-progress) storyboard. The source material for the storyboard is my almost-finished memoirs (vol. 1), currently I have posted 175 frames for the first memoir chapter. Chapter 2 frames are slated for posting later this year, with subsequent chapters to follow. If I can't generate interest in my film project, someday I may try to use the storyboard as a basis for an animated vid. One way, or another, or several; I'm gonna publish salient facts about certain defining incidents of my life. "Damn the torpedoes." |
« At the MBL, I assisted science researchers in the MBL / WHOI (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution) research library, wherein I helped curate seven stacks of multilanguage scientific and technical volumes and journals. WHOI discovered the wreck of R.S.S. Titanic that year. At left: a famous picture of the "sea serpent" in History of the Northern Peoples (by Olaus Magnus ca. 1555). I was asked to translate (f/ medieval Latin) a description (in Gessner's Historia animalium) by staff due to the latter volume's popularity with visitors. |
« At WHDB, I prepared abstracts of misc. refereed scientific and/or technical journal articles (in English, or translated into English) in Physical, Chemical and Biological Oceanography; Marine Sciences; Marine Engineering; and related disciplines. A part-time job before entering law school; abstracts published each month, Part B: Deep-Sea Research (Oceanographic Literature Review), © 1988 Pergamon Press, London available at DSR Archives 1988–89, web archive now managed by Elsevier on the ScienceDirect site. |
« At IAI / AESOP I helped with licensing and admin. for companies producing CFD codes for military and aerospace industry; CFD teams were composed of personnel from Princeton University (School of Eng., Mechanical & Aerospace Dept). I just handled billing matters, aided in licensing, and catalogued a library of CFD monographs. Gained exposure to CFD including military and/or commercial aircraft applications (dual-use); limited exposure to sub/surface hydrodynamic uses; basic exposure to: X Window, UNIX, FORTRAN |
« At LMS, I co-produced their NASDAQ (small-cap) prospectus which yielded $8M in investment capital; responsible with CFO and securities counsel for final prospectus filed with SEC. I also assisted with misc. state / fed corporate filings. Designed / coded a DBMS (Paradox for Windows) for clinical trials, marketing & sales of the Sure-Closure surgical device. Installed / supported new PCs and assisted staff with general applications. On relocating I supported staff remotely and coded new requested enhancements to DBMS. |
« Meanwhile, at MDA, I was hired as one of many law clerks to help with the T-45 (jet trainer) litigation (US Navy contract). I was offered a chance to split my wkly hours and assist the lawyers in their Intellectual Property department while one was on medical leave. I wrote a [draft version of a] patent specification for a method of forming turbine blades (jet engines) from titanium w/in superplastic pressure and temperature regimes. "Embarrassed the boss" (T-45 litigation) via discerning importance of evidence she'd felt trivial. |
« At A-B, I was jointly responsible as consulting contractor, enterprise-wide I.T. negotiations (hardware, NOS/applications, support, telecom, custom software development projects, and mgmt consulting). I worked w/ end users, project mgrs, corp. officers and counsel, & supplier representatives. Designed a TAQ Contracts Negotiations Manual and a Contracts DBMS (Access). Designed a TAQ Contracts page for testbed export of TAQ Contracts Database to an early web server (ver. 1.0 Netscape); presented to mgmt. Team-led 3 J.D.s. |
« Circa 1995, I began designing websites. I did a basic homepage and then spruced it up with tricks I was learning. Soon I was able to build a moderately complex site for my own burgeoning memoirs. This led me to build client sites (1996-2000) such as: MAP (Metropolitan Association for Philanthropy), Starr's Food Market, Millennium Engineering, and a former colleague's law practice. I stopped when I'd become mucho more interested in producing pure art sites, with zero thoughts of SEO, analytics, # of visitors, etc. |
« At Wave, I developed / taught a web development curriculum for a company with instructor-led courses at centers in the US/UK, self-study kits, and a web-based learning center. I taught Wave trainers and students (misc. locations), wrote a Web Power Tools course, developed Intranet Workshops ("ISWs") and delivered several to public audiences. Customized an intranets course for Wave client Ford Motor Co. and was attached to USWeb's Web Architect Certification development team. I was a guest speaker (ACM, '97). |
« SLUCare: I integrated materials from MDs and all of the clinical departments for publishing (public site). Tools: SGI, Apache (virtual hosted UNIX), code editor, browsers. I also designed and coded a new intranet, the “i-net”, an internal web server on NT / IIS / ASP for the SLUCare clinical and admin users. Updated the SLUCare public site and the i-Net daily; developed Adobe FDF forms / ASP for i-Net. I was invited to teach two new CME courses, for Beg./Adv. Web Design, at BCA/AMI's BIOCOMM '99 / 2000 annual meetings. |
« Currently, I assist with patent application work as an independent contractor which involves prosecution (Office Action Responses). Also litigation assistance; primarily dozens of claim charts, and several patent trees. I've also worked in a myriad of ancillary matters (drawings & I.P. marking); a few trademark reg. matters, (athletic league name; and regarding my application for "Propeller Head"); and one domain name dispute. I've also received two utility patents (9,558,636 and 10,068,437, sole inventor) for improving ATM machine networks. |
